Safe Internet and Safe Kids

When it comes to creating a safe internet environment for your children there’s a lot to consider and much of it goes beyond deciding which browsers or Internet Companies to trust. There are dangers not just online but also in instant messaging services and even emails and, in many ways, the internet itself presents not only a world of possibilities but a world of possible threats.

However, that doesn’t mean you should hide your children from it or avoid it. The internet is, first and foremost, a tool and one that can be wielded capably and confidently without fear; it just takes a little knowledge and the right instruments. For kids, you might want to invest in a “cyber nanny” of sorts. These monitoring programs are usually free and can help filter out any objectionable sites, but it won’t stop everything. Investing in a good antivirus program is also key as it can help filter out needless spam and errant links.

One thing you simply cannot do is try to keep your kids from the internet or overprotect them; that will only intrigue them. Communication is always important so talk to your children every once and a while too. If they have questions about “iffy” material online don’t just hide it from them, explain to them why it’s bad. Take these steps and you’ll be helping to make the internet just a little safer for your kids.
